The Convention on the Future of Europe is a temporary body set up by the European Union (EU) Heads of Government in February 2002 to simplify the EU Treaty and identify necessary institutional reform in preparation for 2004 when 10 more states will become members of the Union. Dutch Ministers state that “terminal sedation” is different from euthanasia

In August the Dutch Ministers of Health and Justice rejected a call from the attorney general, Joan de Wijkerslooth, for “terminal sedation” to be covered by the same legal controls as (voluntary) euthanasia.

Mr de Wijkerslooth, who is head of the public prosecution service, argued that because terminal sedation can have the same effect as euthanasia it should be subject to same external controls.

Doctor helps advocate of right to die commit suicide

A woman with terminal cancer who campaigned for Oregon's euthanasia law has committed doctor-assisted suicide by drinking a glass of cranberry juice loaded with barbiturates.
