Finally a success in Australia: Victoria approved the final amendments in  last session in the Lower House. The law will be effective as from June 2019.

The study Helping a loved one die: the act of assisted dying in New Zealand, by Svetlana Feigin and published in the Journal of  Mortality, explored the personal experiences of family members who had assisted with the death of a loved one and resulting consequences (legal, emotional, psychological).

After passage with 47 to 37 in the Victorian Lower House in a 26 hour marathon session, the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2017 was referred to the Legislative Council of the Upper House for further debate. This Council agreed on November 4 with 22 to 18 to take the bill for detailed consideration: 141 (!) clauses were put forward for debate - clearly a filibustering exercis. The council sat on November 17 for another 28 hours before it adjourned

This second update ( the first having been published in April this year) will build upon the first report, providing additional information on requests for medical assistance in dying between January 1 and June 30, 2017, and includes an analysis of trends where comparable data permits. Across the country, there were 1,179 medically assisted deaths between January 1, 2017 and June 30, 2017, accounting for approximately 0.9% of all deaths

Switzerland recorded 67 ' 606 deaths in 2015, or 6% more than the previous year. The flu epidemic at the beginning of the year, the heatwave in July and the ageing of the population contributed to this increase. These are some of the results of the last statistic of the causes of death established by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO). Suicide increases slightly, assisted suicide strongly. 792 men and 279 women ended their days in 2015, or 43 people more than in 2014.
