UK police commissioners call for law review

Friday, October 25, 2019

On the 24th of October, 18 police and crime commissioners in the UK have written a letter to the Secretary of State for Justice, calling for an inquiry into the the current law on assisted dying.

The commissioners wrote the letter in order to express their concern about the current situation in relation to assisted dying: "We believe it is time for a renewed look at the functioning of the existing law on assisted dying. While there are clearly differences of opinion as to whether or how the law should change, we contend that the law is not working as well as it could and seek an inquiry to confirm that."

This letter follows the news that Durham Police and Crime Commissioner, Rob Hogg, has been diagnosed with terminal motor neurone disease and is campaigning for a more compassionate law.
