Belgian Euthanasia Review Committee reported on 2019

The Belgian Euthanasia Review Committee (FCEE) reported on 2019. They published a Dutch and a French press release. The figures relate to the registration documents of patients undergoing euthanasia that were examined by the Commission in the period between 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2019.

German Constitutional Court: German ban on assisted suicide is against the Constitution

On Wednesday February 26, the Federal Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgerichtin Karlsruhe declared the German ban on assisted suicide (that exists since 2015) unconstitutional. This is a great victory for the people who brought this ban to courtamong others: seriously ill patients and doctors.

Spanish government passes first hurdle to legalize euthanasia

On Tuesday 11 February, the parliament of Spain voted in favor of accepting an euthanasia bill for consideration. Hereby Spain’s parliament endorsed an effort by the new Socialist-led government to legalize euthanasia and doctor-assisted suicide. If succesfull, that would make Spain the fourth European Union country to allow euthanasia.

Canadian experts: Medical aid in dying should be extended also to people with mental illness

In Canada, the government is considering changes to make assisted death easier for people who aren't terminally ill. As this development happens, an expert panel of clinicians and ethicists recommends to extend the law also to people whose only medical condition is a mental disorder.
