Lords publish on assisted dying bill

Today, April 4th 2005, a House of Lords Committee published its report on a Bill seeking to legalise assistance with suicide and voluntary euthanasia for terminally-ill people who are mentally competent and suffering unbearably.

TLC (The Last Choice)

Last year in England, a 57-year old man, terminally-ill with motor neurone disease (Lou Gehrig’s syndrome), ended his life at home after three unsuccessful attempts. He had planned to go to Dignitas, in Zurich, but was unable to do so because “he could not afford it”.

Mainly arising from this ­incident, TLC— The Last Choice has been established, principally by Dr. Michael Irwin. Its main objectives are:

  • Give advice on how Dignitas can help the terminally-ill in the UK (eg: explain what happens in Zurich; how to get one’s medical records in the UK, etc)

Activated by the Schiavo case, Louise Pallett, new President of the South African Voluntary Euthanasia Society (SAVES), has been speaking all over the country about Living Wills. Their small, part-time staff is strained in getting documents to people. Though the organization is not initiating euthanasia legislation, some interest has been expressed which they will support.

New Book in Italian

The publisher Eleuthera, in Milan, Italy, has decided to translate and publish Derek Humphry's latest book "The Good Euthanasia Guide: Where, What, and Who in Choices in Dying". It will be on sale in a few months time.

Another Doctor Accused

A GP from Ostend was arrested on 29 July and imprisoned for four days, accused of having ended the lives of 5 patients in a care home over the last 3 years by increasing their doses of morphine. The management of the home brought the case. The case remains open.

NVVE "Do Not Resuscitate Necklace" in MoMA

The Department of Architecture & Design at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York has an exhibition with the name SAFE: Design takes on Risk from October 16, 2005 to January 2, 2006.

SAFE presents about 300 objects and prototypes designed in order to protect the body and the mind from dangerous or stressful situations; prevent and respond to emergency; and provide a sense of comfort and safety. It will be the first design exhibition to take place at MoMA’s new building, accompani3d by a catalogue with several essays and plates illustrating the subject.
