Victoria becoming the first State with legally assisted dying (in 2019)

After passage with 47 to 37 in the Victorian Lower House in a 26 hour marathon session, the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2017 was referred to the Legislative Council of the Upper House for further debate. This Council agreed on November 4 with 22 to 18 to take the bill for detailed consideration: 141 (!) clauses were put forward for debate - clearly a filibustering exercis. The council sat on November 17 for another 28 hours before it adjourned

Statistics on causes of death 2015 in Switzerland

Switzerland recorded 67 ' 606 deaths in 2015, or 6% more than the previous year. The flu epidemic at the beginning of the year, the heatwave in July and the ageing of the population contributed to this increase. These are some of the results of the last statistic of the causes of death established by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO). Suicide increases slightly, assisted suicide strongly. 792 men and 279 women ended their days in 2015, or 43 people more than in 2014.

First year of Canadian medical aid in dying: nearly 2000 cases

Nearly 2,000 people with incurable diseases were helped to die by a doctor in the first year since Canada legalized medically-assisted suicide, according to a report published Friday. From the time Ottawa passed the legislation in June 2016 to June 30, 2017, 1982 people ended their lives in this way, according to Health Canada. Most had cancer, the agency said.
