British Medical Association (BMA) rejects motion to change its stance on assisted dying

Sunday, July 1, 2012

BMA (the British Medical Association) in its annual conference in Bournemouth, rejected a motion moved by prof. Raymond Tallis (chairman of Healthcare Professionals for Assisted Dying, HPAD), to change its current ("morally repugnant") position on (medically) assisted dying to neutral.

A majority - with even one doctor likening it to murder [!] -  unfortunately reiterated with this rejection BMA's opposition to a change in the law.  Doctor Hamish Meldrum, BMA's outgoing President, said: "I think adopting a neutral position is probably the worst of all options. Neutrality does tend to exclude us from the argument, an argument which would have a huge bearing on the working lives of doctors".

From a report in The Independent.co.uk  (Ella Pickover, June 27, 2012). (do read the comments as well, RJ)

I think this is apalling - perhaps the people voting haven't ever suffered never ending pain with no hope of respite - or watched a loved one go through months of agony. These people are narrow minded and fearful - in a world where modern medicine prolongs life for almost everyone - many are left to live horrible lives without dignity or hope - becuase they are too ill to commit suicide. The BMA is failing the UK public - this should go to referendum and people should have the right to opt in to such a scheme, and have to right to take the risks associated with it. That way, if they make the wrong decision, it was their mistake to make. At the moment, millions of people die slow agonising deaths in pain, or with massively reduced mobility and/or failing mental health, and what is often worse is knowing that they are placing a massive burden of care on their friends and family - many of whom will develop health and financial problems as a result. How can this be right. Please BMA - grow a pair and stand up for the right of the British people
